Our Chapter History
The Spokane Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered on July 14, 1979, under the leadership and vision of Dr. Ruth Gossett, a professor in the Social Work Department at Eastern Washington University. Through her dedication and outreach to Sorors throughout Spokane and surrounding communities, a foundation was established for a chapter devoted to sisterhood, scholarship, and service.

Today, the chapter proudly serves Spokane, Spokane Valley, Cheney, Pullman, Airway Heights, Medical Lake, and Moscow, Idaho. For more than 45 years, members have worked collaboratively to address community needs through educational programs, health initiatives, voter engagement, youth development, and scholarship support.

Guided by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.'s commitment to public service, the Spokane Alumnae Chapter continues to create opportunities that empower individuals, strengthen families, and enrich our communities.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. History
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 13, 1913, by twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University. These visionaries wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence and to provide assistance to those in need. From its inception, the Sorority has been at the forefront of social action, with its first public act being participation in the Women's Suffrage March in Washington, D.C. Today, Delta Sigma Theta is a private, non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. The organization is a sisterhood of more than 350,000 predominantly Black, college-educated women, committed to the constructive development of its members and to public service with a primary focus on the Black community. The Spokane Alumnae Chapter proudly carries this legacy forward locally. By adhering to the Sorority's Five-Point Programmatic Thrust, we ensure that the vision of our founders remains a living, breathing force for good in the Inland Northwest.
